AI + Capacity
AI and the Stewardship of Human Capacity
January 2026
Every new tool asks an old question: who is the steward? AI is no different. It can expand our capacity — draft, summarize, accelerate — but it cannot hold responsibility. That remains, as it always has, with us.
The temptation is to offload not just the work but the judgment. But stewardship is precisely the act of holding judgment — of discerning, deciding, and carrying the weight of what we build. To hand that to a tool is to bury the very capacity we were meant to steward.
Use AI, then, as an amplifier of stewardship — not a substitute for it. Let it expand your reach, but keep your hand on the wheel. The steward who uses her tools well multiplies; the steward who hands over the wheel abdicates.
